NAACP Image Awards Winners Revealed: ‘The Color Purple’ Triumphs in Virtual Ceremonies

The three-day virtual presentation of the 55th NAACP Image Awards came to a close with notable victories for “The Color Purple” and Michael B. Jordan’s directorial debut, “Creed III.”

Leading the pack with 16 nominations, “The Color Purple” secured wins for outstanding soundtrack or compilation album and outstanding ensemble cast. Director Blitz Bazawule also received recognition for outstanding breakthrough creative in a motion picture. Michelle Buteau, the creator and star of “Survival of the Thickest,” clinched the outstanding breakthrough creative award for TV.

Michael B. Jordan was honored with the outstanding guest performance award for his appearance on “Saturday Night Live,” while “Creed III” secured its first win in the outstanding stunt ensemble category.

Other winners included documentaries “High on the Hog: How African American Cuisine Transformed America” and “Invisible Beauty,” outstanding youth performance recipient Leah Sava Jeffries for “Percy Jackson and the Olympians,” and notable directors Neema Barnette, Dawn Wilkinson, Chris Robinson, and Allen Hughes.

The Image Awards ceremony will be broadcast live from the Shrine Auditorium in Los Angeles on Saturday, March 16, featuring Queen Latifah as host. Special recognitions include the prestigious Chairman’s Award for writer and activist Amanda Gorman and the induction of New Edition into the NAACP Image Awards Hall of Fame. Additionally, R&B legend Frankie Beverly will receive the Lifetime Achievement Award.
