Zac Posen has been appointed as the Creative Director of Gap Inc., also serving as the Chief Creative Officer of Old Navy, according to the brand’s official announcement this past Monday.
A 43-year-old fashion designer with an illustrious career spanning over 25 years, from fast fashion to high-end couture, is expected to bring fresh changes to Gap, as the brand faces several recent challenges.
“Gap Inc. and its subsidiary brands have shaped American fashion and pop culture for decades, and Old Navy shows a lot of potential for growth. I am extremely excited to join Gap Inc. in revitalizing the brand with great products, bringing in new experiences and a fresh creative culture,” shared Posen.
Having studied design at prestigious universities such as Parsons and Central Saint Martins, Zac Posen gained recognition while still in school after the story of a dress on Paz de la Huerta. This turning point paved the way for him to launch his own eponymous brand, which was favored by many world-famous celebrities like Naomi Campbell, Rihanna, and Katie Holmes. However, the Zac Posen brand had to close its doors in 2019. The collaboration with Gap Inc. marks the latest transformational step in Posen’s career since he parted ways with his namesake brand.
“I am delighted to welcome Zac Posen, one of the foremost honored designers in America, to start a new chapter with many exciting surprises for Gap Inc.,” said Richard Dickson, President, and CEO of Gap Inc., in a statement.
“His expertise and cultural experiences have brought continuous contributions to American fashion, making Posen an excellent choice for the company as we embark on a new creative culture across all products and refresh our longstanding brands.”
Former Creative Director of Gap Inc., Len Peltier, is said to have resigned last August. Posen’s appointment not only demonstrates Gap’s strategy in repositioning the brand after the turmoil of Kanye’s event but also confirms how brands are relying on celebrities and renowned names to lead the creative field.
