Matthew M. Williams departs from Givenchy, and the Fall/Winter 2024 collection for men showcased at Paris Fashion Week was designed by the fashion house’s in-house studio team. Both events have heightened anticipation and curiosity among fashion enthusiasts for Givenchy’s latest collection, as the question arises: How will Givenchy fare without the presence of Matthew Williams? What will the designs look like when created by Givenchy’s team of staff?
The answer was clearly demonstrated through this runway show – “Gentlemanliness is an expression of character,” notes Givenchy’s collection. The design team presented a study on a new image of “The Modern Gentleman” through the lens and legacy of Givenchy’s founder – Hubert de Givenchy. Exploring a fresh interpretation of elegance in Givenchy’s style, reflected through the portrayal of various gentlemen personalities, is the direction Givenchy’s team is taking at this pivotal moment for the brand.
The personal wardrobe of Givenchy’s “father” also contributed to inspiring accessories and decorative details in the designs, such as shearling, cat-eye pattern prints, and even layers resembling hair attached to both jacket lapels and pants. Hubert de Givenchy’s signature belt logo has also been revived with the “2G” emblem, adding a touch of nostalgia to Givenchy’s collection.
Overall, one can see slender and delicate silhouettes juxtaposed with boxy, structured outfits, while a plethora of sequin patterns and embellishments stand out amidst the dark-colored ensembles. The blend of sophistication and everyday wear, strength and softness, creates layers of personality for a Parisian gentleman. And in Givenchy’s eyes, Hubert de Givenchy himself epitomizes the idea of a Givenchy gentleman.
Givenchy has done what seemingly every Fashion House does when lacking a Creative Director: returning to its original roots and honoring the very values that define the icon and success of the fashion house.
