On Sunday afternoon, the Mavericks immediately got to work constructing the tall task the Lakers were going to have to ascend. Luka Doncic, defended closely by Anthony Davis, dispassionately stepped back and released a three, and then another and another.
Dallas was on fire; Los Angeles was cold. In the first twelve minutes, the Mavericks drained seven triples and ten total, while the Lakers could not get a single shot to fall.

At first, the Lakers made minor improvements, then gradually increased their speed. From that point on, Jarred Vanderbilt resolved that he and his colleagues would move forward rapidly. Even though Davis and LeBron James hit the important shots that gave the Lakers the amazing 111-108 victory on Sunday, it would not have been achievable without Vanderbilt.
Austin Reaves noted, “I often tell people ‘Don’t just look at the stats,’ because there are a lot of things he does that don’t show up in the stat sheet,” before going on to list the numbers.
Vanderbilt recorded a stellar 15 points, 17 rebounds, and 4 steals, effectively thwarting Doncic’s efforts in the first half, similar to the unsuccessful marriage proposal that happened during the same time. Davis notched 30 points and 15 rebounds, James managed to score 26 points and Dennis Schroder, subbing in for the ailing D’Angelo Russell, finished with 16 points and 8 assists.
Vanderbilt contributed eight points, eight rebounds, and three steals in the third quarter, helping to pull the Lakers back into the contest. He noted that he was attempting to raise the vigor, be more aggressive, and create a shift in the flow of the game. “I wanted to bring the energy, give my all, and try to influence the result of the match,” said Vanderbilt.
The Lakers have gained considerable traction lately, having won three games in a row and four out of five since the NBA trade deadline. Vanderbilt, one of their new additions, has been invaluable for his defensive capabilities and his ability to make contributions to offense without a typical scorer’s skill set.
He was the catalyst for our defense when it came to Luka, getting some takeaways and forcing him to take some tough shots. His rebounding on both sides of the court encouraged us to tighten up our defensive play. On the other hand, he knows how to exploit the fact that opponents tend to give him space to shoot and uses his corner cuts and crashing the boards to gain extra possessions – his contribution to our team is invaluable.
On Sunday, James had to push through a right foot injury that caused him intense pain, as the swing in the game was so drastic. He stated, “I wasn’t going to stop playing, due to the significance of the game, and the momentum that we had, so I figured we could still triumph. We will watch it in the coming days and take it from there.”
James hobbled away from the stadium, limping noticeably. Despite his physical ailment, it was clear that the Lakers had displayed remarkable tenacity; they had managed to stage two huge comebacks with margins of more than 25 points during the season, and the acquisition of further reliable support players just before the trade deadline further strengthened their resolve.
Since the trade deadline, Russell and Malik Beasley have been at the helm of the Lakers’ victorious games; on Sunday, it was Vanderbilt’s moment to shine. Vanderbilt highlighted his defensive prowess by focusing on Doncic, who only scored 12 points in the initial quarter.
My aim was to unsettle him. He can be very dangerous when he gets in the flow of the game and is at ease. So, I decided to put pressure on him by picking him up 94 feet away. I knew as the game went on he would get tired and have to bring the ball up and down the court and then make a move. All I wanted to do was be aggressive and make him uncomfortable.
Vanderbilt’s defense was successful in causing a 27-point comeback in a game that the Lakers had difficulty in shooting from beyond the arc, only managing to make six out of 34 (Vanderbilt making their sole attempt). It is a rare feat, as since the 2020-21 season, only one team has won a game shooting such a low percentage on 30 or more threes; in the history of the league, only 11 teams have accomplished this.
The Lakers demonstrated shooting, skill, and a forceful will when they defeated the Golden State Warriors, and they hope to continue this versatility to climb the postseason mountain they have constructed since their 2-10 start.
