The Kansas City Chiefs have attained their second Super Bowl championship in four seasons, triumphant in Sunday’s game against the Philadelphia Eagles at State Farm Stadium in Glendale, Arizona. NFL MVP Patrick Mahomes, who re-injured his ankle in the opening half, led the Chiefs in the second half and has earned his team an esteemed place in the ‘dynasty’ discourse. The Chiefs also won the Super Bowl in 2020 and reached the title match in 2021. Mahomes threw three touchdown passes to three receivers, Isiah Pacheco ran for a score, and linebacker Nick Bolton scored on a fumble return. In the last moments, Harrison Butker nailed the decisive 27-yard field goal.

Tight end Travis Kelce commented that the Chiefs’ second-half success was due to their “heart”, and acknowledged some players’ apprehension due to the magnitude of the occasion, which had caused them to act out of character in the first half.

At half-time, we got together and figured out our strategy. In the second half, we moved with tremendous energy.

While the rest of the spectators were expressing their approval or disapproval of Rihanna’s halftime performance, Kansas City fans were anxiously watching the situation unfold. With just over 90 seconds remaining in the first half, Mahomes was running on third down and 15 when TJ Edwards tackled him around the ankles. This caused Mahomes to stay on the ground for a period of time that was very alarming for Chiefs supporters.

He then hopped to the sideline, grimacing in pain, and was even seen putting his head on the shoulder of a staff member. However, at halftime he was seen running off the field, leading many to believe his injury wasn’t as severe as it looked.

At the halfway point, Mahomes was 8-of-13 passing for 89 yards and had two rushes for 11 yards. Despite a high ankle sprain that had re-aggravated, the youngest quarterback ever to start in three Super Bowls continued to play, giving Chiefs fans a boost with a touchdown drive on the first drive of the second half, which included a 14-yard run. On the game-winning drive, Mahomes’ 26-yard rush put the team in field-goal position, with television replays showing Mahomes in pain as he got up and headed back to the huddle. His MVP status was confirmed when Andy Reid remarked, “He showed it tonight.” Mahomes earned the Super Bowl Most Valuable Player Award for his outstanding performance.

Jalen Hurts had an incredible performance, leading the Eagles to a Super Bowl record with three rushing touchdowns and 70 yards on the ground, as well as a two-point conversion. He also was successful in the passing game, completing 27 of 38 passes for 304 yards and a touchdown. Coach Nick Sirianni commended the quarterback saying this was “the best game I’ve seen him play in the two years we’ve been together.” AJ Brown had a 45-yard touchdown catch and Jake Elliott kicked two field goals. Unfortunately, Hurts also had a costly fumble in the second quarter that momentarily deflated the team’s momentum.

As the Eagles pushed towards a score that would put them ahead by two possessions, Hurts made a run to his right when the ball unexpectedly slid out of his hands at the Eagles’ 44. Fortunately for them, the ball took a favorable bounce and was picked up by the Kansas City linebacker Nick Bolton, who then sprinted into the end zone untouched. This resulted in the score being tied again at 14-14 with 9:39 left.

To his credit, Hurts quickly moved on from his mistake and got the points back on the next drive. On the 12th play, he ran for his second touchdown of the game, cutting through the Chiefs defense from 4 yards out. This and the extra point made it 21-14 with 2:20 left in the half.

This year’s highly-debated referee decision

It is a common occurrence for contentious calls or missed calls to be a deciding factor in big games and this was the case in the Super Bowl. With two minutes left in a tie game, Patrick Mahomes‘ pass intended for JuJu Smith-Schuster sailed into the Eagles’ endzone. It appeared that the Chiefs would need to kick a field goal and the Eagles would be able to engineer a scoring drive with the time remaining on the clock. However, a flag was thrown and James Bradberry of the Eagles was accused of holding as Smith-Schuster was trying to get open. Instead of kicking a field goal from the 22-yard line, the Chiefs were given a new set of downs and could use the time to get closer to a game-winning kick. This call was contested by many Eagles fans and some thought even if it was technically correct, it was too nit-picky at such a critical point in the game.

Greg Olsen, former tight end and Fox broadcaster, expressed his opinion that the situation should not have been called a penalty, but Mike Pereira, the network’s rules expert, said the whole event must be evaluated, and the player in question, Bradberry, accepted that it was a hold.

Damar Hamlin, a safety for the Buffalo Bills, was delighted to be at the Super Bowl, even though he was there as a fan and not a player. Having witnessed him almost dying on the pitch a few weeks before, seeing him cheerfully enjoying the big game was truly touching. In a pregame interview, he expressed his longing to return to football, but also expressed his gratitude for being granted a second chance at life. He indicated that he was leaving the outcome in God’s hands and was thankful for the opportunity to experience it.
In the first quarter of the Bills-Bengals matchup on January 2, Hamlin was brought to the ground during a tackle and tragically collapsed. Doctors and trainers on the field immediately began administering CPR and he was rushed to the hospital in an ambulance, leaving players, fans, coaches, and viewers watching from home in a state of shock, uncertain if Hamlin had survived. Fortunately, experts attribute the quick response of the on-field personnel to saving his life after he suffered a cardiac arrest.

The most difficult part of the ordeal for Hamlin was coming to terms with his emotions. “I am generally a private person, but this experience put me in the spotlight, which is a good thing in a way because I think I represent a lot of positivity,” he said. “I want to be a role model to many different communities around the world. There must be a reason for everything.”

During the game, Hamlin was seen in the commissioner’s box with Donna Kelce, the mother of players from both teams, and Roger Goodell. Later, he posted a photograph with LeBron James.
